Well, for me, misery was in not knowing the truth. My addictions were making myself and others miserable while life seemed to rapidly spiral downhill. Day to day thinking was completely controlled by my addiction and I couldn't see it. One desperate day I got an ultra-clear look at my subconscious mind's "programming", the part of myself that kept me drinking; seeing that made me able to pour out the rest of my beer and never drink again. After that cathartic experience, as my understanding of the dynamics of addiction grew, soon afterwards other nasty habits started falling by the wayside as well.
 
Hello, I'm Wayne Fennimore, and material I present here is a way for you to start looking at your thoughts in a new way, for the purpose of regaining real choice in life by understanding how people with addictions actually think.
Understanding how the cycle of addiction works is key to breaking out of it forever.
Addiction often starts when we get so caught up in dealing with what the world is throwing at us that we let our ego take control without first examining our real purpose in life, as our "true self" would have it.  Eventually, this always leads to a nagging feeling of dissatisfaction that is temporarily relieved by indulging in some form of 'getting high', either through chemically altering the mind and body or some activity that temporarily fills the need for gratification.

If the habit that forms to attain relief has a destructive quality to it, then relief comes at a high cost. More often than not, life suddenly seems filled with incredibly bad luck, people around us "...just don't seem to understand us" and our dreams soon look like they will never be attainable.
 
If you've tried to quit a habit and couldn't, or after years of sobriety you find yourself deeply immersed in your old habit again, it's not a lack of willpower that's to blame (your willpower is just fine), it's that your subconscious mind works behind the scenes to keep old habits alive, coloring conscious thought to its own advantage, essentially, to keep habits alive. It's a survival mechanism of the ego.
